6 Mile Long Run / Before Breakfast / Home

6 Mile Long Run. 29 MPH winds. Cold. Tired after New Year's Eve. Pre-breakfast. Tough to get out. WOW. SO hate the wind… But got dressed, headed out, and rocked it.

Drew was still asleep, Jordan was pre-breakfast, as was Krista. Totally squeezed this one in, and rocked it.

Ran pretty fast, although I tried NOT to… I tend to run fast(er) when I'm pissed off at the weather conditions!

After my run, while making lunch (Pork Tenderloin!!!) , I registered for both Shamrock Shuffle and Illinois Marathon. Feels good to have both of those OFFICIALLY "on the calendar."

Slight right foot pain. Not sure if there's anything to that, but notable that it's there… Shin is not sore to the touch at 6:30P… Hopefully this bodes well.

Skipped church (everybody did!) and rocked my miles in the A.M. Bright and sunny. Windy and cold, but that's more tolerable for me when it's sunny!

Tried to keep this one slow and easy. Did so (mostly) and even managed to negative split with more "uphill" and wind on the way back. Hmm. I'll take it.

Another EFI week of HH Novice Supreme. This with "make-up" miles from last week AND a super-crazy week to boot.

This far in, no acute pain to speak of. General tightness, stiffness, etc, but certainly nothing major.

This bodes well for the weeks to come. 18 Week HH Novice "officially" starts the week after next.

Solid after-church 5 miler. Felt cold going out, but I was even bit over-dressed once I got going. Pace was faster than I thought it would be. HR was jacked up for the first 1/2 mile or so. Not sure what's up with that. Eventually settled down to a nice HR / Pace for LSD.

Slight right arch pain, but nothing hobbling or notable.

NOTE - Changed in the car and ran this one without stretching / dynamic warm up. Need to S T R E T C H today / tomorrow.

Racquetball tomorrow.

Illinois Marathon iChallenge Part 2 of 2: Saturday 4/30 Marathon

LOVE the 7AM start. Early up, early out, early (hopefully!) finish. LOVE IT.

Mark and I got out in good order, making it to our meet-up spot in plenty of time. What fun to have a marathon in your home town… to wake up in your own bed, grab your morning coffee from your own coffee pot, and drive to the race on the same roads you drive to work on each morning. With no traffic. And plenty of parking a block from the starting line.

We met up with Josh, Sarah, and Gemma. We high-fived, strategized, and simply enjoyed each others' company and pre-race energy. We were all in very different places training / expectations-wise, but there we all were. I love this about marathoning. We weren’t able to connect with Krista P , who was running her first half EVER. (Which she ROCKED.) If anything, that was the one “miss” of the meet-up…we all would have enjoyed her nervous “newbee” energy. Mostly because we all remember it!

Josh, Sarah, and Gemma splintered off of the group as Mark gear-checked our stuff. I talked with a couple of other runner friends while I waited for him. We headed to the starting pen just as the national anthem was finishing. Good timing. Navigating the pen was not as difficult as in years past, as the half marathon (the insanely popular and populated option!) had a staggered start (7:30A) this year. That helped a TON. We found our spot (within reasonable sight of the 4:30 pace group stick) and we were off and running moments later.

Miles 1-2:
We were able to keep our pace mostly in line. We stuck with the 4:30 stick fairly easily. My HR was higher than I thought it should be (10:00 miles felt like 9:00 miles of previous races…) , but it was of little consequence. Things were going generally as planned. At mile 2.5 (by my church…First Presbyterian Church of Urbana) , a friend of mine was selling “Illinois Marathon Shortcut Maps” for $1. TOO funny! I only heard about this later…I didn’t actually see him when we ran by. I wish I would have. HILARIOUS.

Mile 3:
Still on-pace, still feeling a little “harder than it should” , but not overly so. We came into the “conversation sphere” of a guy with a HUGE diagonal scar on his shoulder. He was explaining to the lady next to him that he recently spent 6 months in a coma, and was having a hard time “coming back.” Oh YEAH…well...MY training sucked because I hate running outside in the cold. Don’t tell ME about your problems… Yikes. That really put things into perspective.

Miles 4-7:
We kept on pace, still with the 4:30 stick. Rally Monkey Posse Sighting #1: We saw Krista, my dad, my mom, Alice (Krista’s mom), and Joe (Alice’s husband) at Mile 7. We told them that we were feeling fine, and intended to keep up with the 4:30 pace stick. At mile 7.5 , I started to chafe a bit. Nasty. Shoulda known better. I hadn’t worn the shorts I chose before. Shame on me. I knew that Mark usually carried a stick of Body Glide, so I posed these numbered questions: 1) Do you have your Body Glide? 2) Where has it been? 3) Where are you comfortable with me putting it? Mark answered with a 2-segment response: 1) Yup. 2) I’m clean. Nuff said. Thanks. *grabs BodyGlide* I’ll catch up.

Miles 8-9
Again…kept on pace, with the 4:30 stick in sight. At this point, the elite, front-running half-marathoners, having started a full 30 minutes AFTER us, REALLY started passing us. (The first few passed us at Mile 6 or so, but it really started being notable / an issue as we navigated the narrow paths of Meadowbrook Park.) Wow.

Mile 9
Mile 9 was a notable mile. We had Rally Monkey Posse Sighing #2! This was a total surprise. Suzanne (my ex-wife) , her daughter Gracie and my boyz (Drew and Jordan) were at the SouthWest corner of the Meadowbrook Park trail. FUN! I didn’t expect to see them until Mile 18.5, so this was a TOTAL bonus! At Mile 9.5 , we were, once again, treated to the energetic, crazy-fun sounds of Shark Bandit playing in the Herb Garden pavilion. They didn’t disappoint. These guys (kids?) are fun. They “get” it. Once again, our entire group and everybody around us was yelling and fist-pumping as we ran by. Fun. LOVE those guys. Nice work, kids.

Mile 11
Rally Monkey Posse Sighting #3! At the corner of Pennsylvania and Race (where we used to live until last May!) , we saw dad and Krista. (Mom was up farther ahead, but I didn’t see / hear her. Shoot.) At this point, we were slipping a bit from the 4:30 pace stick, but it was still in sight. We told them of our plans, yet the anticipated reality… “Next time you see us, we’ll probably be behind the 4:30 stick.” Truer words have never been spoken. A little farther up on Pennsylvania Avenue, Mark dropped back. I stopped with him, but he gave me the thumbs-up “go ahead” sign. For some reason, we don’t do the Pokorny brothers “go on ahead” butt-tap. We need to. I knew it was bad right then and there. I was slipping, EVEN WITH the “slow and easy” mentality, and Mark was CRASHING. Bad. I still thought I had it in me to “maintain” at this point. If I just didn’t slip too much farther…. I wasn’t going to have a big “push” on the last 6 miles, but perhaps I could maintain…

Mile 11.5
I kept Mark in “hind-sight” by glancing back. I made sure he “took the turn” where the full and half marathon split. He did. I wasn’t sure if he would. That. Bad.

Mile 13
By this point, I had lost the 4:30 stick. Couldn’t even see it. I was concentrating on keeping my HR in check, pace be damned. I saw Suzanne and the kids at Mile 13.75 (Rally Monkey Posse Sighting #4!) and told them that I was slipping from pace… Grace and Jordan even ran with me for a few blocks. Uh-oh. That’s not a good sign. They were in flip-flops.

Miles 14-17
My pace slowed, but stayed pretty consistent via my “run by heart rate” mantra. Still though, it felt like I was slipping. Somewhere during Mile 14, I lost Mark for good. 100% out-of-sight. I never saw him again for the rest of the race. I kept glancing back through Mile 26 though, hoping I’d see him “catching up!”

Mile 18
At Mile 18, I cramped. Big time. Not just the twinges of cramps, but the quad-lockdown cramps. Shit. That’s it. This is the “second half” of my race. I was no longer struggling, trying to keep pace, keep “slow and easy” heart-rate… I was stop-and-go running, shuffling, massaging my quads, calves, just trying to keep moving forward in some fashion. This is how it went for the rest of the race, through Mile 25, with the following notable events…

At Mile 18.5 I saw Suzanne and the kids again. (Rally Monkey Posse Sighting #5!) They REALLY “got around!” I ran with the kids again for a bit and tried to “look strong.” Not sure how well I succeeded.

I tried to run Miles 19-20 as much as possible (no “stops” / shuffles!) through the Maynard Lake / Lincolnshire Fields area. I so so SO wanted to be in good shape for this part… I ran this the Sunday before (Easter Sunday) with cousin Chris, and I had visions of running it strong and quick… Not the case. Next year…

At Mile 20.75, I grabbed a beer from the guys on Valleybrook Drive. I’ve seen them every year, but have always declined. This year, I “took ‘em up on the offer.” It was that kind of race. And I had to stand in line… Fun. No regrets.

At Mile 21.25, I met up with Krista, Mom, and Dad. Rally Monkey Posse Sighting #6! I was cashed at this point. I even stopped and posed for a picture with Krista. I “waved them off” of our Mile 25 meet-up, knowing that I’d rather have them get to the stadium (finish line) in good shape. I was comfortable with my inevitable outcome, and didn’t really need the additional “support” for that last part.

At Mile 22.25, I opened the door to a Port-A-Potty to the sounds / sight of a shrieking woman. C’mon…those things lock. It’s an easy system. Green means “open.” I felt bad, but not my fault. Foul.

At Mile 22.75, I saw Suzanne and the kids. Rally Monkey Posse Sighting #7. The kids ran / walked with me for a bit. * sigh * Disappointing.

I ran through the Mile 24 aid station, giving high-fives to my work (Wolfram) peeps. A co-worker took a jab, saying: “We thought we’d see you sooner than this!” My laughter-garnering reply: “You didn’t see me the first time…this is my second lap!”

The mile “Country Club Hill” was horrible as always, but I ran a 9:30 pace all the way up it. “Small victories.”

When made the turn onto 1st Street at mile 25.xx, it was right into a CRAZY-strong wind. It was nose-over-toes all I could to do keep moving forward. But I pushed it, even slapping hands with PrincessSean, who was making his way back through the course to find MailOrderAndi. (Twitter peeps.)

My finish was fun… Krista P was waiting for me in the “chute.” My dad got some GREAT high-five sequence shots from the E Main. Incredible. LOVE it. Krista says that I yelled “running HURTS!” , but I don’t remember it. Not denying it though, as it sounds like something I’d say!

Finish time: 5:13. Ouch. Another marathon time with a “5” as the first number. Never thought I’d see that again. Never want to again. Never WILL again. This I vow.

My “recovery” was pretty notable. I grabbed a water, my marathon medal, and my iChallenge medal. Both were heavy. And they clinked together as I walked. Which annoyed the hell out of me… So I carried them.

After talking to all of the Rally Monkey posse, I made my way back to the West Great Hall in search of pizza. (I was crazy-hungry the last 5 miles, and the thought of the post-race pizza was all I could think of!) No dice. Either it wasn’t there, or I couldn’t find it. (The latter is the most likely answer!) I tried some of the pasta, which was a bad decision…

As I greeted Mark (TOUGH race, AWESOME finish!) , I spent the next 30 minutes trying to talk myself out of throwing up, a battle that I eventually lost in Meadowbrook Park via a quick pit-stop on the way drive home. Yuck. But fitting.

* sigh *

Things I Learned From the 2011 Illinois Marathon

1) Training works. Both ways. I was under-trained. This was coming off of a couple of races where I was over-trained and hurting. My training did NOT go as planned this time, mostly weather and other excuse-related failures. I 100% own this. As the weeks progressed, I considered it somewhat of an experiment…how well could I run this if I used the training I had, running “slow and easy?” Answer: Not very well. That mentality only carried me so far. I need to be “trained up.” No question about it.
2) My combination of BullFrog SPF30 AND a running hat work for sun protection. I need both. One or the other doesn’t cut it.
3) Body Glide RULES. I will never go without it on race day. EVER. It works. It simply WORKS.
4) I like carrying a hand-towel. Not only for sweat-mopping, but for holding under my chin while I drink the on-course Gatorade. Perhaps it’s a little OCD, but I can’t STAND sticky Gatorade on my face / neck. Drives me CRAZY. Carrying a towel removed this factor entirely. It was also very easy to carry…I didn’t even notice it.
5) Even if they SEEM LIKE they’re exactly the same as the equivalent model from 2 years ago, don’t run with new shorts on race day. See Mile 7.5.
6) The iChallenge RULES. Love it. I will do it every year. I had an absolute BLAST at the 5k, and I 100% love and embrace the idea.
7) I love my race posse. My friends and twitter friends (and the line blurs on race day…LOVE it!) are incredible, fun, funny, warm, supportive, motivated, people. And every one of them, with no exception…although highly motivated and disciplined, has the ability to “laugh at themselves.” I hold this trait in high regard, and it’s no accident that all of my friends have it in common.
8) My family ROCKS. They knew I was under-trained and wishy-washy about my approach to this race. And they came out and hauled themselves around MULTIPLE points on the course just to watch me pass by. Wow. Truly notable, and appreciated.
9) Every training season / cycle is different. Every race is different. Circle of Life. (or something like that.)
10) The Illinois Marathon is an amazing event. It’s fun to see both repeat racers (Josh, Sarah, Mark!) and first-timers (Sean, Andi, Gemma) realize and note this. If you’re reading this and considering participating next year…DO IT!
11) I like running without a fuel belt. They piss me off. They jiggle. They’re constrictive. It’s an annoyance I can eliminate.
12) I probably DO need to use GU every 5 miles / 1 hour. GU-less, I was amazed at how crazy-hungry I got the last 5 miles.

Now, I rest, recover, and figure out my next race. I’m thinking a fall marathon is in order…plenty of time to recover and train-up. I didn’t register for Chicago, but I’m leaning toward spectating it. That might be a fun change of pace / give me a new appreciation for it.

In the meantime, I’m sure I’ll continue to reflect on ILThon 2011. Wow. What a crazy journey / event. * sigh *

Illinois Marathon iChallenge Part 1 of 2: Friday 4/29 5k

A 5k at 6:30 PM the night before a 7:00A marathon? Sounds crazy. Wait…you get an extra medal for it? OK! Sign me up!

And I did. The day that registration opened. My marathon number was 58. Not 158. Not 1158. Nuff said. I will do this every year that it’s offered as an option. What a HOOT! What an absolute BLAST!

Never, since signing up, did I have any intentions of running this fast. Or even moderately fast. It was to be slow and easy from the get-go… A “loosen up” run before Saturday’s marathon. For the most part, it was just that… Although being grotesquely under-trained (more on this later!) , even the slow and easy miles felt faster than what they were. No worries though…I wasn’t too tight, and the route was fun.

How absolutely INCREDIBLE to run a race on some of the same roads as the following day’s marathon! And to finish in the exact same spot! Wow. It was like what a rehearsal dinner is to a wedding. Same venue, same cast of characters, same “main event” , but more relaxed, fun, care-free… FUN. What absolute FUN.

Mark and I met up pre-race with a few twitter-verse friends who were also doing some form of the iChallenge. We joked that we should push to the front, lock hands, and run our 10:00/mile pace! HA! Throughout the front-side of the route, we ran down the street with frat parties on BOTH sides of us. A couple of runners (one in particular) ran into each house’s yard, high-fiving all of the partiers, even those leaning over the raised porches / balconies. Classic. LOVES. Another 5k’er must have been partying himself…we saw him emptying the contents of his stomach onto the Green Street Walgreens sidewalk. Eew. (Cheers from the other 5k’ers, though!)

We continued to try to keep our pace and our under-trained hearts under control, but both were higher than we wanted them to be. Bleh. Didn’t care. We were having too much fun running, “soaking it all in” , chatting, and burning off nervous pre-marathon energy.

Upon entering the stadium, we hammed it up for our spectating posse…Krista B and Krista P. FUN! Usually, we’re not in such good shape / spirits upon entering the stadium! I did my best to imitate the epic Jefferson Leap at the finish line. I have no idea if the photog “caught” it, or if it looked anywhere near as cool as his. But in my mind, it did.

We ended up coming in at 30:04. Damn. It felt more like 26:00. Had we known we were so close (that is, if I hadn’t been so focused on my jump!) we might have tried to come in under 30:00. Or not. T his time, it wasn’t really “about that.” But is always real y “kind of is.” Ya know.

We hydrated, high-fived, picture-posed, and knew we’d be back the next day.

FUN, FUN, FUN.

I will do this every year. Loves.

PERFECT running weather. GREAT to get out with cousin Chris, pre-Easter dinner.

Ran a good portion of this one on the IL Marathon route...the LATER miles. It was fun to run this stretch so loose and "peppy." Usually not the case when I'm on these roads... In fact, several people yelled "Mile 22!" or "Mile 23!" when they saw us running by. (Prolly 'cause of my IL Thon 2010 shirt!) FUN. I love this.

I think my final taper run was set to be 8 miles, so this was short of that. Not fretting it though.

Going to run the rest of the week slow and easy, LOW mileage, the entire time HOPING for weather as perfect as this on 4/30...

·       Featured Twirler Mandy Patrick, sans explanation of any sort, declines the invitation to perform.
·       The Vegas line on the game is listed as: “Huh?”
·       The official hoodies and t-shirts are printed on the other side of Alamo Bowl 2004 merch.
·       You call the venue’s ticket office to ask about kickoff time and the agent replies: “What time can you get here?”
·       It’s broadcast on a channel called ESPN-WTF
·       Despite Jim & Loren’s best efforts, Saturday Sportsline callers keep steering the topic back to Field Hockey Recruiting.
·       The Illini cheerleaders, deeming all scores unworthy of push-ups, opt for one half-hearted back / neck stretch per point.
·       Pre game "flyover" consists of a local crop duster on his way home from work.
·       Illinois marching band starts to play the "World Famous Three - In - One," quits after two.
·       Officials ask a random fan to lend them a quarter for opening coin toss.
·       Players’ "Swag Bag" consists only of a Steak N Shake coupon book with the good ones torn out.
·       Stadium "instant replay" consists of P.A. guy screaming, "Did you see that?"
·       With no Disneyland footage available, the local TV news “look in” at players having relaxed, frivolous pre-game fun takes place at the Holiday Inn Express arcade.
·       Crowd Chant: “I-L-L” … “SO – AM – I”

Cold Weather Bikin'

Not a fan of the cold weather.

But also not a fan of inside fitness.

Why go to a spinning class where a guy in ill-fitting shorts yells at you about how to pretend that you're ridding up and down hills...? Why not... Bundle up, get on a bike...and ride up and down some hills?

Pictured: My dad's 197X (1974?) Schwinn Varsity. Put some air in the tires, gave it a test run, and took it out for a GREAT ride this morning. It needs to be greased, tuned, de-gunkified, and have all the other things done to it that have not been done in 20+ years. But for now... Perfect. Solid. LOVE that bike. I've been window-shopping for road bikes for years, but I think my resources will be better spent "tuning up" this one. Love it. If it ain't broke...
